A few months ago, the Daniel Kahikina Akaka Department of Veterans Affairs Community-Based Outpatient Clinic was just a steel frame in Kalaeloa. Now, the state-of-the-art clinic is beginning to look like a ready-to-use building.
Hunt Companies Hawaiʻi and its contractors have spent the past few months erecting the walls of the structure, installing walls to the inside and outside of the facility, and preparing it to be part of the Veterans Affairs Pacific Island Health Care System. The nearly 90,000 square-foot medical facility opens next year, providing critically needed medical care to the 87,000 veterans who call Hawaiʻi home.
While work continues inside, plans are also progressing on the land immediately surrounding the structure. In March, Hunt announced a partnership with Xeal, which will provide 19 EV chargers in the clinic’s parking lot, contributing to Hawaiʻi’s clean-energy goals.
In addition to the veterans and their families who attend the clinic, and the clinic’s medical and administrative staff, the charging stations will be available to the greater West O‘ahu community, which now hasfew charging options. The chargers will be managed through an app using encrypted, token-based connectivity, which is more reliable than Wi-Fi or cellular.
The new chargers will be installed this summer. The public can use the EV charging stations when the Daniel Kahikina Akaka Department of Veterans Affairs Community-Based Outpatient Clinic opens in early 2024.
